Rx Fire Autumn Workshop at Woodcock (5th Annual)

Training opportunity for learning to lawfully plan and conduct prescribed fires. People who attended this two hour training, this year or in previous years, may join us in January/February to conduct multiple prescribed fires in Athens County and the surrounding areas. Our burn was conducted in native species grassland and is prescribed to sustain native meadow habitat for bobwhite quail. It also reduced woody invasive species stems in the field without use of herbicide.
Timberdoodle 5K/10K

Explore the recently developed trail system by running the Second Annual Timberdoodle 5k/10k. The route goes through forest, meadow, and orchard on gently rolling hills in the heart of historical Shawnee land. The trail is 3.2 miles. 10k runners will make two loops to complete the distance. 8:00 am packet pickup start 9:00 race start Cost is $30 for the 5k and $40 for the 10k and benefits the Woodcock Nature Preserve in its land management and stewardship efforts.

Experience first hand knowledge from 2 driven fellas on a journey to bring comprehensive understanding of natures hidden fruits, nuts, greens, and roots.

People who attend this two hour training will be invited to join again later in the season to conduct multiple prescribed fires in Athens County and the surrounding areas. So, if prescribed fire is something you're interested in pursuing in your career, working with us can be a good entry point. Our burn is conducted in native species grassland and is prescribed to sustain native meadow habitat for bobwhite quail. Land Acknowledgement

Showed off a new kiosk on The Friends Trail, our 5K trail which is open to the public from sunrise to sundown (with some exceptions during hunting season). The installation includes a sign with a land acknowledgement, as well as an original print from distinguished artist and printmaker Suzanne Chouteau. Suzanne is the head of the art department at Xavier University, and member of the Shawnee Tribe. The land acknowledgement tells the history of the indigenous people on this part of the earth that we're standing on.

Teaming up with United Plant Savers and Wisteria Event site, we talked about using Rx fire for supporting wild and forest-farmed black cohosh in oak-hickory woodlands. This class was offers the basics on why, what, how, when and where to do prescribed fires, provides a networking opportunity for people who wish to volunteer on several small burns locally.

Growing Shitake Mushrooms & Oak-Hickory Management

Workshop designed to help people identify maple, oak, and hickory trees, inoculate logs to grow gourmet mushrooms to eat and sell to restaurants, and plant ramps in a maple forest stand.

Hosted a large volunteer day on the last weekend of October to remove invasive species, maintain the property boundaries, build trails, and make a batch of charcoal.

Worked to turn invasive autumn olive autumn shrubs into a carbon-negative biochar soil amendment. Volunteers helped cut and drag branches of invasive autumn olive shrub into piles for later pyrolysis. Snacks, water and some biochar for personal garden use were provided to volunteers.
